Richard Dicey started Freeze Branding nearly thirty years when it was first introduced at the time of the Fine Cotton Scandal. Since then it has become the preferred method of Branding for Horses from all disciplines. Whether it is Initials on your favourite Pony or a Registered Brand on your Thoroughbred or Show Horse, a Miniature Stallion or the mother of all Draft Horses, Richard Dicey, Freeze Branding can do it all !
Many registered Horse Associations require Freeze Branding as a means of Identification More and more amateur Horse owners are Freeze Branding as a means of Protection from theft.

How its Done?
Firstly the area to be Branded, which is normally on the near and offside shoulder, is shaved back to the skin. I prefer to use an old fashion blade razor as it makes a cleaner area and there is less chance of spooking the Horse with the sound of a generator or electric razor.
Next, I put a twitch on the Horse to prevent any movement whilst the Brand is being applied. This is sometimes new and uncomfortable for the Horse but doesn’t hurt them in any way. Once they are settled in position I wipe the area with the freeze mixture to prepare them for the Brand application. The Brand is applied and held on the area for a short period, ensuring a complete Brand. This time may vary depending on the colour of the Horse.
HOW DOES IT WORK ?
The degree of coldness of the Branding mixture actually kills the pigmentation of the skin so that when the hair grows back it grows back white and the Brand is visible.
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE ?
Initially the Brand comes up as a welt. It will then fade and after a week or so it will start coming out as white in the skin and hair pigmentation. My Brands are a Standard inch & 1/4 size which leave a Neat ‘n Nice Brand !
Do you come to us ? Yes. I travel to your property as part of the service.
Do I need my own Brand ? If you will be Branding on a regular basis you may want to consider registering your own brand with the Dept of Primary Industries.
I have a Registered Brand that can be used if required? Some owners that are Branding purely for protection and identification choose to simply use their initials. This may not meet the requirements of some Horse Associations if the Horse is to be formally registered so this should be considered when deciding.
Do I need a crush or have my Horse sedated ?I never Brand in a crush due to the potential for injury. Only rarely would I sedate a Horse as the twitch usually controls the majority of Horses.
